Preston on the Hill is just to the south-east edge of Runcorn, but a quieter walk would be hard to find. The walk begins among fields and lanes near the Lewis Carroll Wood, site of the parsonage where he was born and which was donated to the Woodland Trust.

The walk continues along the Bridgewater Canal and a stretch of the Trent and Mersey, the two joining at a lock by the southern entrance to a tunnel.

Absolutely nowhere to park in Dutton, car park at pub closed. We were fortunate as a kindly local let us park on his path. At New Manor Farm Section 7 the footpath had been enclosed in an electric fence and as there was no other obvious way round we had to turn back on the walk. Very disappointing. The small part of walk we managed was really nice.

A really nice walk again from Jim and good to take visitors on due to the Lewis Carroll connection. One small point - Waypoint 15 Cross the stile and go left as indicated by the arrow, but only as far as a farm gate. There you need to turn right and cross to the far side of the field, where you will be able to see a footbridge when you get near. It is just before the field edge bends to the left. I would add here that it's not directly right from the farm gate but more like 10 o'clock towards a copse area and directly opposite to the newly built tree house at the farm. We spent 10-15 minutes looking for this.

A really nice walk. We enjoyed it. Well done again Jim. At point 20 the gates appear to have gone as walked down the lane. At point 22 there is a nice tea shop at the bluebell cottage gardens about 200 metres from the bridge.
