The walk starts from the National Trust car park at Lifeboat Road and takes a short gravel and boarded walk to the beach. There is then a long stretch going south along the beach as far as is possible, the firing range at Altcar Camp. From here good tracks go inland and then north to reach a local reserve where a waymarked path crosses heathland back to the start. It is mostly easy going with pleasant scenery and wide views out to sea as far as the North Wales coast. It is one of a series series of walks done from home during the 2020 lockdown.
