Linlithgow – Beecraigs Country Park – Cockleroy Hill – Union Canal Avon Aquaduct - Linlithgow

This walk takes in a number of attractions in the vicinity of Linlithgow. Beecraigs Country Park is two miles south of Linlithgow. The route includes the visitor centre and goes past a play area which includes an impressive climbing frame, before climbing the 903ft-high Cockleroy Hill.

After leaving Cockeroy Hill the walk goes down to the Union Canal. It offers an optional one-mile detour to see the canal aqueduct over the River Avon. The walk takes the canal towpath to Linlithgow Canal Basin.

A small amount of this walk is on public roads with no pavements. Care is needed when walking along such roads, as stressed in the detailed instructions. It is recommended that large groups should split up into small groups of three when walking along such roads.

Please note that the owner of Kipps Farm is disputing the right of way from Waymarks 12 to 16 of this walk. We are consulting with the local council about this; in the meantime you may wish to do this walk to Waymark 11 and return the same way to avoid a possible conflict.

9/2/2012 - Brian Charlton

We did this walk in mid August 2012 and found that there were trees down in the park after point 9 in the guide. We were not allowed to go through this part of the park so we turned right at the playpark, walked to the road and turned left onto the road up to point 10. Regarding the dispute with Kipps Farm, we found that we could avoid passing through the farm by coming back down off Cockleroy Hill about half way to Grid Ref NS 991 743 follow the path that runs to the right (west) for 250m to a gate. Through the gate turn left (south) for 200m and join the path at the bottom of the hill, turn right on the path to pick up point 13. This also avoids going back onto the busy road.
