This is a very easy walk to the south of Linlithgow, which would be a gentle stroll were it not for the modest height gain and an optional, short, uneven stretch along the opposite side of the Union Canal to the towpath. The walk starts by the bus stops and the historic Star and Garter Hotel (established c1759) at the east end of Linlithgow High Street. It passes by the entrance to the railway station, goes through a tunnel under the tracks and then crosses the Union Canal close to Linlithgow Canal Basin. Frm there, the route runs south along Manse Road but includes a pleasant diversion through Rosemount Park and the wooded grounds of the erstwhile Carmelite Priory, so that only about 150 yards is along the roadside. It then passes through modern housing estates, along off-road footpaths and some quiet roadside pavements, to reach 'Dark Entry', an old road that is now closed to motorised traffic. A link to Beecraigs Country Park is reached at the western end of this track. The return route to the public transport in Linlithgow runs downhill along off-road footpaths and pavements through more modern housing estates to reach the Union Canal. Here it first takes a narrow, unpaved path that runs west along the canal. When the water level in the canal is high, this may involve wading through shallow water across the concrete slab over an overflow, but an alternative that avoids this stretch is available. Having reached and crossed a footbridge across the canal, the main route turns east and follows the towpath as it passes under two road-bridges to regain Waymark 2 and the start of the walk.
