The walk starts in the historic town of Linlithgow, worth a visit in itself. See www.linlithgow.com. The outward route uses the Union Canal towpath. This was one of the last canals, completed in 1822, just before the railway age. The walk includes crossing the Avon Aqueduct, the longest and highest in Scotland at 250m long and 26m high. A wooden staircase links the aqueduct with Muiravonside Country Park. Sadly, one of the best walks in the park, along the River Avon, has been partially closed. However, many fine paths remain open and the Newparks Farm is well worth a visit.

On the way back, the route follows the River Avon and passes a nature reserve around a flooded quarry. Finally, after going through some housing, the route follows round one quarter of Linlithgow Loch, with great views of the palace.

This is a pleasant waterways walk with a stroll in the park in the middle. It can be abbreviated into a straightforward 6 mile walk by jumping from Waymark 3 to Waymark 16, missing the 106 steps to the park and the park itself. Cross the aqueduct, noting the waterfall below, and continue for a few hundred metres through Bridge 49. On the opposite bank is the Bridge 49 café and bistro. To reach it walk a few metres beyond the bridge, ascend some steps on the right and cross the bridge to reach the café. After refreshment return to the aqueduct and cross it. After a few hundred metres there is a bench and some steps down, away from the canal. This is signposted John Muir Trail and River Avon Heritage Trail. Continue as from Waymark 17, back to Linlithgow.
