Located four miles from Lochinver, West Sutherland, this is one of two walks on the estate (the other is Walk 5346). Most of it is on a surfaced path; a middle section between Waymarks 3 and 5 is not yet surfaced (August 2009) but work is in progress to complete it. In good weather this section causes no problem, but if murky follow the numerous marker-posts. The landscape is typical West Highland, with knobbly hillocks and numerous lochans. The moorland is mainly deer-grass with patches of heather, lots of mosses and lichens and colourful sundews, bog asphodels and orchis. We saw many dragonflies and three buzzards; the eagles sometimes seen enjoying the thermals on the west face of Quinag escaped us; we forgot to take binoculars. The Quinag (808m) dominates most of the route, while Suilven overlooks the later part.
The remains of two shielings are visited in the mid-section (see Additional Information). It's a very enjoyable family walk, with no climbing difficulties. Until the surfacing is completed, boots are best. Dogs are welcome. Refreshments etc are available in nearby Lochinver.
