Walking from The Admiral Nelson PH, Little Braunston, this route takes a short length of the Grand Union Canal, leaving it to follow the course of the 2042 yds long Braunston Tunnel, opened in 1796. From these Northamptonshire heights the views over very pleasant landscape are good. The picturesque village of Welton is visited with its blend of interesting old and newer dwellings, and where there is a heart rendering plaque to a little child, seen from the street below the churchyard. The route continues further north to Ashby-St-Ledgers, a small, picturesque village, then returns to Braunston on the Jurassic Way.A walk that offers historical interest amidst lovely countryside.

Very enjoyable and varied walk, and the Admiral Nelson is a great pub with well-priced food. However, there's a lot of new housebuilding going on close to the line of the Braunston Tunnel in 2024. In July this has resulted in closure of the bridleway from the A361 as far as waymark 4. The best route from where you meet the A361 is to cross and turn right to take the cycle-footpath along the main road heading south for around 150m until you reach the traffic island, where you can turn left to take a metalled path heading east (you'll shortly see the tunnel's brick air shaft on your left). Then take an unpaved footpath keeping east (staying north of 2 ponds shown on the map) until you re-join the bridleway and towpath near waymark 4. This situation could change at any time, and the original route might be restored: but currently there's no guidance given on what alternative route to take at the point of blockage.

Pleasant walk with some good views looking down the valley when leaving Ashby heading back to the start of the walk.
