The walk starts in the centre of Littleborough before joining the canal towpath, which is followed for a short distance before walking alongside a stream to reach some woodland. You continue through the woodland above the stream before crossing some fields to reach a rural road. After walking along the road for a short distance you walk alongside another stream to reach one of the main routes (A58) over the Pennines, now superseded by the M62 Motorway. After crossing this road the route continues up towards Blackstone Edge to pass an animal sanctuary on Chelburn Moor. It passes two reservoirs before dropping down to the canal, which is crossed before climbing again to reach the edge of Calderbrook Moor, before dropping down to pass a housing area and returning to the start point via suburban roads and footpaths across fields. There are several up and down sections with the first climb being approximately three kilometres long. The climb to the highest point is about one kilometre long.
