The gardens were opened in 1984 as part of Liverpool's regeneration, but fell into disuse in 1997. One part, which includes the Chinese and the Japanese gardens, was reopened in June 2012. This walk starts at the nearby Merseyrail station of St Michael's and climbs a hill by a woodland walk before dropping to the level of the formal gardens. At this point there is an option of extending the walk by using a new entrance onto the riverside walkway. A tour of the formal gardens follows before a return to the railway station through woodland. It is a short but attractive walk for a part day and from a platform has excellent views across the Mersey to the Wirral and the Welsh Hills.
