This walk is to the north of the city centre and unlike others on the website, including some of my own, it deliberately avoids the prettier parts of Liverpool. My intention had been to discover where the towpath of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal began, but I found myself walking along the little-used Dock Road past the huge wall around the old docks and the massive entrances to them and I found this extremely interesting. Some are derelict, others converted to up-market apartments and many have are used by small engineering and other firms. Of course, once I found the towpath I continued along it into the countryside, so the walk is potentially 128 miles long! I included the new canal cut along the Pier Head, as this is where the narrowboats now used for leisure purposes come right into the city centre. Identified in the text are two places where the walk could easily be shortened to different railway stations from the one where I finished.
