Llangollen - Vivod Mountain - Moel Fferna - Steam Railway Circuit

A circuit of the gentle hill ridge to the west of Llangollen - the northern tail end of the Berwyns - topped off by a return on the Carrog - Llangollen heritage railway.

Llangollen is worth a long weekend in itself, with white-water canoeing; the heritage steam and diesel railway to Carrog; castles, museums, mines and quarries; Thomas Telford's nearby Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and canal world heritage site; a busy town centre with lots of food, drink and accommodation; and hills all around.

On the walk you get easy navigation (mostly), views across the Vale of Llangollen to Llantysilio Mountain and the distant Clwydian Range and the edge of Creigiau-Eglwyseg which sits above Offa's Dyke Path.

We did this walk in reverse, and navigation isn’t easy between 44 to 35. There is an alternative though. If doing it in reverse , at waypoint 54 go straight ahead (cross over A6), after 200 metres there is a fingerpost with two directions; right to re-join route at 51 or straight on, this will lead you through the forest on forest tracks to the gate at 35. If you are coming from Llangollen at 35 gate do not turn left but follow forest track straight ahead.
