Most walks from Llangollen are to the north of the River Dee. Here are the main attractions of the area: the castle, the abbey and the vast limestone plateaux plus a more integrated network of footpaths. This walk though, is to the south, an area that I have often cycled and one which is quieter but gives outstanding views of the attractions mentioned, plus great vistas further south. The walk has a steady and lengthy climb plus a tough descent above the valley where the River Dee once flowed. It also has attractive woodland and a stretch of lane that links the main footpaths. This is a walk to complete your knowledge of this beautiful area. Near the end it passes the entrance to Plas Newydd, a possible starting point for the walk.

This is a truly excellent walk. Don't be put off by the 2km lane walk as the various views across the Dee and then the Ceriog valleys are very good. Also at this time of year the berries are spectacular - Rowan, Hawthorn, Blackberry and Rose Hips. After WM 5 the path beyond the second stile rises further to a kissing gate before descending (sometimes quickly) to the second gate. At WM8 the right of way is now clear if a little damp underfoot. At WM 16 don't be tempted to carry on to the road as you will miss some excellent views of Llangollen and Castel Dinas Bran after WM 17.
