This walk has something to offer in any season. It starts from the old Loddiswell Station on the railway line between Kingsbridge and South Brent. This was a casualty of the Beeching cuts in 1963. Initially re-opening as a tea house, the station is now a private house and the surrounding land a nature reserve. The first part of the walk follows the railway alongside the River Avon for about two miles to Topsham Bridge. Then leaving the river, you climb steadily on quiet country lanes with sweeping views in all directions over the South Devon countryside. On the way the 'petrol heads' amongst you can call in at the home of Quantum Sports Cars, a small company producing sports cars in either finished or kit form. Close to the end you reach Avon Mill Garden Centre, where are excellent tea and cakes for the deserving walker.
The riverside section can be muddy in places after heavy rain, but nothing that someone who is reasonably nimble and wearing approach shoes or walking-boots will not be able to negotiate with ease.
