This stunning and quite strenuous hike in the SE foothills of the Picos rewards us with quite wonderful views over the Picos Mountains, as well as the delight of hiking through forests, over pastureland and beneath towering cliffs. There is amazing wildlife.
From the picturesque village of Los Llanos nestling beneath Monte Subiedes and not far from Potes in Liébana region, we climb steeply through mixed forest of holm-oak and beech, always enjoying amazing views and later passing through hillside pastureland. Later we begin our descent towards the Deva Valley and pass through the charming village of Camaleño. This has a bar but we were unlucky enough to find it closed!
Now we take an undulating way which follows the course of the Rio Deva which brings us below sheer, towering cliffs. We saw griffon and Egyptian vultures that nest in the cliffs. We were also lucky enough to see a marten. All too soon our way descends back to Los Llanos and our start point.
