Walk begins on south bank of River Ribble in Lower Penwortham and initially follows the river until reaching The Old Tram Road. This track was built to provide a link between the Lancaster Canal, which terminated in Preston, and a branch of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal at Whittle Le Woods. From the Tram Road the route follows a disused railtrack to Brown Edge Wood and into Dog Kennel Wood.
On leaving the woods the route passes through the old part of Walton Le Dale to the River Darwen, which it follows to the perimeter of the Capitol Centre, a retail park with good refreshment options.
The walk then reaches the River Ribble which it briefly follows before crossing to its north bank via Ribble Bridge, site of the Battle of Preston. Once on the north bank the route passes through Frenchwood, Avenham and Miller Parks back to Penwortham Old Bridge, which it crosses to make its way back to the start.
