After leaving the village of Lumphanan, this walk takes the route of an 18th Century military road. It is now a green lane which leads through an avenue of mixed deciduous trees before reaching more open agricultural scenery. After following a usually quiet main road for a short distance, the walk enters a piece of heather moorland where it starts to rise gently. As it rises some wonderful panoramic views of a large part of Aberdeenshire can be enjoyed. The walk then gradually descends along a grassy path and some open woodland before completing the descent. A short stretch along an unclassified road leads to farm tracks and finally a short stretch along the side of a stream, before returning to the village.

The walk has now been altered in an attempt to improve the navigation problem at waymarks 6 and 7.

Thoroughly enjoyed this - a great walk with the most amazing views and for the most part easy to navigate - with one exception. Waymark 6 easy to find but once the track peters out, it was very difficult to identify Waymark 7 and find the start of the farm track leading downhill.Could not find the old fence nor the two tracks mentioned in the walk directions, but eventually, after crossing some very rough ground, found a new fence and the rough beginnings of the track down to farm. Walking poles would have been useful on this section as great care needed not to turn ankles etc in ruts hidden by long grass. Once we found track however, rest of walk was no problem and the views on way down well worth the effort needed to find the track.
