The steep-sided Lydford Gorge is the deepest in South West England and is owned, administered and maintained by the National Trust. It is a circular walk through a spectacular chasm in the hills where a raging torrent runs through a deep rocky riverbed surrounded by trees and bushes. The walk first takes you through the woods alongside the top edge of the gorge and at the far end climbing down to admire the 30m high White Lady waterfall; (see photo on the right). But be warned: in the depths of the gorge, you need to be agile as the terrain is treacherous in places, with several steep inclines and narrow, sometimes slippery paths. In many places handrails have been provided to assist you to keep your balance. The gushing streams are a fantastic spectacle as the water thunders into pools from above and swirls. Part of the return route through the bottom of the gorge comprises wooden walkways that take you to a higher viewing point. From here, you can look down on the swirling water from above. Continue beyond these walkways and you come to the impressive Devil's Cauldron whirlpool - something not to be missed.
This walk is probably suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs which must be kept on a lead, but hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best; and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. At the start and half-way points there are separate cafés with picnic tables, toilets, and also gift shops. There are regularly bench seats along the route.
