Machen - Rhymney Valley Ridgeway Footpath - Mynydd Machen – Machen

An energetic but extremely rewarding walk in the Welsh hills, where steep beech woodlands merge into panoramic hilltops. A mixture of short road sections, footpaths and bridleways, generally free of mud and with few stiles, there are however, several steep climbs, one of them lengthy. As part of the route is over exposed hilltops, waterproofs, warm clothes, food and drink are essential.

A lot of the conifer plantings have recently been felled, so you might see little more than saplings where the guide says there is a forest! Step 7-8: The farm names seem to have disappeared. Also the gate in step 9 is not currently painted black. Step 10: I couldn't see a grassy track so I ended up taking a narrow, rocky path around the corner of the garden wall and making my way down from there. Step 11: The bit beyond the style at step 11 is _very_ overgrown, I still have the bramble scratches!

As you emerge through the forestry back into Machen, the railway bed you cross is not the Newport to Caerphilly line but the B.J.R.(Bassaleg Junction to Rhymney line.)
