Walk starts from centre of Maghull, Magele in the Domesday Book, which boasts a large number of pubs, cafe and restaurants. First section of walk is north along Leeds - Liverpool Canal to Green Lane swing-bridge which was blown up in 1939, allegedly by the IRA. Upon leaving the canal the route moves onto the disused Cheshire Lines rail track, which connected Aintree to Southport from 1884 to 1952. Upon reaching the M58 motorway the path uses pedestrian tunnel and bridge to make this section surprisingly straightforward. Upon leaving the motorway the route passes Wood Hall Farm, which dates back to 1300; the current building is Grade II listed. Then rejoin the canal to head back to starting point.
