This walk is a mixture of canal towpath (the Leeds - Liverpool) and lanes. As on many walks in this low-lying, flat area it is the vast expanse of sky that impresses, so save it for a good day! Melling has much of interest to look at and an excellent pub at the halfway point. As you near Melling along the towpath, its position on a low sandstone hill is easily appreciated.
