This is a nice little circular walk around the Peninsula and close surroundings of the historic University city of Durham in the Land of the Prince Bishops. The route visits the University sports fields at Maiden Castle, the University Campus, the UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral, the Market Place, The Sands, Gilesgate, Pelaw Woods, Old Durham and finally returns to Maiden Castle. The route crosses and recrosses the River Wear four times as well as presenting a terrific panoramic view of the city from a rarely seen viewpoint.
The walk starts from the University sports fields at Maiden Castle before entering Maiden Castle Woods, from where the route climbs up out of the wood onto Whinney Hill for a seldom-seen view overlooking the city. The route then descends off the hill, through woods before a street walk delivers the walker to the university campus. Having wandered through the campus complex the walk heads towards the city centre, then takes a riverside path to cross Prebends Bridge to enter the Peninsula. The route next passes through the cathedral, Palace Green and Market Place before leaving the Peninsula across Framwellgate Bridge. A little riverside walking follows before the walk once again crosses the river and follows the river as it swings right along The Sands area of the city. The route then moves away from the river as it climbs up through the suburb of Gilesgate and crosses two major roads to enter Pelaw Woods. The last lap of the walk takes the walker through the hamlet of Old Durham to cross the River Wear for a final time and re-enter the university sports fields at Maiden Castle.
