The walk goes through the Newborough Warren Nature Reserve, which embodies woodlands and is home to many sand-based species and invertebrates. There were about 150 red squirrels in the forest in 2004 and it is hoped the numbers are growing. The evergreen trees form a good habitat for them.
The Island of Llanddwyn, at the far point of the walk, has several stories attached but was also used as a base for pilots, who guided ships over the Caernarfon bar. The pilot's cottage is still there, as is the warning cannon. The lighthouse and the island were used as a location in the film Half Light with Demi Moore, though it was supposed to be somewhere in Scotland.
The Malltraeth Sands area, on the way back, is a good site to see seabirds.
The forest tracks are also horse-riding tracks, with some tracks only for horses with carts. Also there is an orienteering course near the car park.
