You start from Manningtree Station and head towards Lawford via paths through wooded areas. Then you pass through fields, along quiet country lanes and part of the Essex Way to reach the picturesque village of Dedham, with its beautiful church, tea rooms, pub and a visitor centre with four floors selling various items. Then from here you follow part of the River Stour to the equally lovely Hamlet of Flatford, where you get to visit Flatford Mill and the National Trust tea room and shop, Bridge Cottage and also Willy Lotts' Cottage. All these are immortalised in the paintings of John Constable. Leaving here, you walk through more fields, eventually to join the Stour Valley Path which you follow to Brantham. After a couple of roads you join a high-banked path along the River Stour towards Manningtree Village. You then turn right away from the village on the road back towards the station.

We started this walk at point 4 as we parked in Lawford Church car park mentioned in point 3. Refreshments were available in Dedham and Flatford and the public toilets were open at point 25. Be warned point 36 was incredibly wet and boggy so suitable footwear is a must. The instructions were very detailed and accurate and we enjoyed this walk which us just over 3 hours to complete.
