Mautby is a village of just a few households that is spread over a large area. This walk shows you most of the village and the beautiful countryside around it. First of all the route follows quiet country lanes to Mautby Hall and then public footpaths all the way across to West Caister.

The scenery around this area is mostly grazing marshland, with a lot of horse paddocks (with the footpath going through a couple). From this low position, you can clearly see the high ridge of land that once surrounded an estuary that was here several thousand years ago. Most of the Broads National Park is within this reclaimed land.

This footpath then heads up the hill at West Caister and along to West End. From this road there are lovely views to the surrounding landscape and over to the stunning Caister Castle. The castle dates from the 15th Century, with one of its towers still standing at its full height of 100ft (33m). The towers started construction in 1432 by Sir John Fastolf, who was the inspiration for William Shakespeare's Falstaff. The castle is open to visitors, with a motor museum in the grounds too.

From West End, the final leg of the route follows public footpaths back up the hill, with some more grand views to the castle, all the way back to the church in Mautby.
