You are spoilt for choice on the variety of walking paths around Medomsley. This particular route starts from the highest point of the walk in Medomsley Village and heads north down into the Derwent Valley to intersect and pass along the delightful Derwent Walk, a former railway line. The route then starts the gradual climb back up to Medomsley through wooded valleys, open fields and lanes.

From Medomsley the route descends through a series of fields that presents the walker with great views looking north across the Derwent Valley before the route intersects the Derwent Way, one of the finest railway paths in the north-east. After walking a long section of the path that ends with the crossing of a high viaduct, the route then heads south through the interesting wooded valley of the Pont Burn. The remainder of the route comprises mainly field-walking with a small section through a wood before the route returns to the loftily situated village of Medomsley.
