This is a town and country walk in parts of two towns and one city. It crosses into Chadderton (Oldham) and Blackley (Manchester) for two stretches. The walk starts at the bus station in Middleton (Rochdale). The first section goes up to Mills Hill and the, canal passing a church and several old buildings via a pedestrian area, urban roads and footpaths behind industrial areas. It goes alongside the River Irk before reaching the canal near Mills Hill railway station. It then follows the canal for about one kilometre before heading to Alkrington Woods, using urban roads past some more industrial areas before going through the edge of Alkrington Garden Village. It crosses a golf course before following footpaths alongside and over the M60 motorway to enter the wooded area. It follows footpaths through the wooded area to return to the start point after leaving the woods. There are a number of pubs and food outlets on the walk and several cafes in Middleton town centre. You pass a number of listed properties, some of which are over 100 years old, in some areas even older. The route follows parts of the Rochdale Way at the beginning and end of the walk. It also follows part of the Oldham Way.
