The walk starts at the metro station in Milnrow. The route begins with a climb of about one and a half kilometres climbing, about 50m. You follow a couple of roads from the station to reach a footpath which is followed above the River Beal. After leaving the river there follows a section through a housing estate to the top of the climb. There is then a stretch along rural roads to reach a small hamlet before dropping to the canal, which is followed for some two kilometres. After the stretch along the canal there follows a smaller climb of about three kilometres, climbing about 24m. You pass the edge of a housing estate alongside a brook, using a cycle-path to reach a road. After walking along the road for a few metres you follow a second cycle-path to reach a second road, which is followed for about 100m to reach another cycle-path. The third cycle-path is followed over a hill to reach another road. The road is followed over another hill to reach a footpath. You continue along the footpath passing houses to reach the start point. Street names are added for clarity.
The general picture is of Clegg Hall, which you pass between Waymarks 09 and 10. Some footpaths shown on the map would appear no longer to exist on the ground. This is the main reason for following the roads around the area of the housing estate near the beginning of the walk. There is also a lot of newer housing around Waymark 13 which does not show on the map (walk 2020 – map 2016 edition of OS Explorer). Street names are added for clarity.
