The route consists of two contrasting circuits or a figure-of-eight (or more specifically a dumb-bell shape). This allows for one or other loop to be walked in isolation, though I recommend both, of course. There are several field-gates and kissing-gates to negotiate, all in good working order. The combined walk offers several fine picnic spots and I counted four sturdy bench-seats along the route.

The Gallow Hill loop involves a steady climb out of the town and along a pretty wooded strip, followed by a circuit of the hill, first through trees but then in the open, giving fine views to the hills. Most of Gallow Hill's trees have recently been felled, but the woodland area is being transferred into the ownership of Moffat Community Woodlands, with the intention of replanting with native tree species.

Once back down the wooded strip to Waymark 05, your second loop is entirely through attractive open country, either via field-paths, farm tracks or a country lane with the opportunity of seeing alpacas, before returning to Moffat's lively High Street with its pubs, cafés, shops and all the customary bustle associated with a veritable 'tourist trap'!

Information for Dog Owners: subject always to the normal precautions to be observed by dog-owners when walking in sheep country, this walk is considered suitable for biddable dogs.
