The Monfragüe Natural Park 'red route' can be started either from the car park at Villarreal de San Carlos, or if you want to avoid the long descent from the village to the river, from Punte del Cardenal. The route crosses the old bridge and then traverses up the wooded slopes on the south side of the lake to the Santuario y Castillo de Monfragüe. You then descend on the other side of the Sierra de Monfragüe to follow the road to the Salto del Gitano narrows and vulture nesting site and viewpoint. Return on a path that follows the lakeside via the picnic spot at Fuente Francés to the start of the walk.

Despite picking up a copy of the red walk from tourist info we weren't told that the old bridge was under water. Only clue was that the road to it disappeared into the river. So we started from the new bridge and although we felt the loop up to the castle was worth the climb we wouldn't bother with the other loop past the fountains. It was just a slog up and down hill through scrub which hid any views.
