Monsal Head - White Lodge - Sheldon - Ashford in the Water - Monsal Head
This is quite a short walk, though it can be quite demanding, with some steep climbs and descents.
Much of the route is along field and valley paths and tracks. Some road-walking is required, mostly through Ashford in the Water. The main climbs and descents are in the area around Sheldon, though avoiding the steepest path in this area, passing along woodland paths, climbing steps up the steep bank and descending along a gully to return to the path beside the River Wye.
The pub used on this walk is the Cock & Pullet in Sheldon. This is a quite recent development; until it opened, Sheldon had been a 'dry' village for about 25 years. The former village pub, the Devonshire Arms, was next door and above on the other side of a narrow driveway. This is a popular, walker-friendly pub and can be busy. They offer a good-value menu at reasonable prices; the set roast dinner is particularly good value. They offer a good range of hand-pulled beers, extended since my previous visit and including Greene King's 'Abbot' and Timothy Taylor's 'Landlord' when walked.
