This circular walk starts at the main dam of the Lac de Montbel. You descend into the Hers Valley near Camon before climbing up to the hamlet of Canterate. Here there are stunning views across the wooded hills of the Ariege and Aude to the north and east and of the Pyrenees to the south and west.
From here you descend along a winding wooded country lane, occasionally catching glimpses of the Lac de Montbel through the trees, before emerging in the village of Montbel. From here it is a short distance to the shore of the lake, where you can take a dip and in the summer months, get a snack and drink at the lakeside buvette. The final leg of the walk takes you along an undulating track close to the lakeside, before returning to the car park by the dam.
