Mow Cop - Kent Green - Macclesfield Canal - Scholar Green - The Rookery - Mow Cop
The start point of the walk is the village of Mow Cop situated on the Staffordshire / Cheshire border, just outside Stoke-on-Trent. The village is dominated by Mow Cop Castle, a folly located at the highest point and which can be seen for many miles around.
Starting from the castle car park, the walk proceeds to a rock pillar known as the Old Man of Mow, from which there are commanding views across the Cheshire Plain as far as Manchester, Liverpool, parts of Shropshire and on a clear day, the Welsh hills.
You now leave the high ground and quickly descend through fields and woodland to Kent Green and the Macclesfield Canal. Continue in a southerly direction along the canal as it meanders through the Cheshire countryside to Scholar Green, where you leave the canal adjacent to a lock with only 12" of drop, which marks the old boundary between the Macclesfield and Trent & Mersey Canals.
The route now continues through agricultural land to The Rookery, a village where refreshments can be obtained at the Robin Hood Public House and the local chip shop. From here you gradually ascend back up to Mow Cop across meadowland with the far-reaching views slowly appearing again before you.
