This is an easily accessible walk start located only five miles from Plymouth City Centre by road or just a half a mile by taking the water taxi from the Barbican across to Mt Batten.
The walk starts from the major car park on the seaward side of the road, opposite the old hangers; and the first two miles is along an excellent coastal path affording magnificent views of Plymouth and of Plymouth Sound. This section is quite hilly, so be prepared for a few ups and downs and quite a few steps at various points.
The coastal path is followed around to the holiday chalets at Bovisand, just above the natural sandy beaches, the nearest ones to Plymouth. Towards the end of the Bovisand Holiday Chalets complex, the route swings inland and uphill towards the village of Down Thomas.
In the vicinity of Down Thomas there are several fields and associated stiles to cross. The walk then swings back towards Plymouth once again and follows the high ground towards Staddiscombe. The route then joins the Erme / Plym trail for its descent through Radford Woods to sea level once again, down by Radford Lake, usually inhabited by a wide variety of waterfowl.
The final section of the walk then returns along the edge of Hooe Lake (a tidal lake!!) and around to Turnchapel, before descending along the well-signed track by the Havens Marina, where many luxury yachts are moored; and so back to Mount Batten and its water sports centre, which is open to non-members and serves food and drink throughout the day, an excellent spot to round off the walk.
