The area behind the road from Barmouth to Harlech is wild and remote. It is mainly above 1,000ft and is criss-crossed with tracks that, at one time, were the main roads serving the area. These old drovers' roads were the main lines of communication then and were used by farmers taking animals to market as well as by stagecoaches. On this walk we use these old tracks and the main focus is the old stagecoach route to Harlech and Pont Scethin, the bridge over the upper Afon Ysgethin which flows down under Pont Fadog to Talybont and then to the sea.

I did this walk after heavy rain although I did not know it at the time. The track approaching Llyn Erddyn was flooded and the surrounding land was waterlogged. The stream running from the lake across the track was carrying a large quantity of water which proved unsafe to cross.
