The walk starts at the metro station in Newhey. You follow the road from the station to reach a footpath which is followed alongside a brook and through woodland before walking up to and alongside Ogden Reservoir. From the reservoir you climb, crossing fields and along tracks, to reach the highest point with your first view of the motorway. The walk continues downhill to reach a brook, which you walk alongside before climbing to pass under the viaduct, after which you walk down towards Hollingworth Lake (which is not visited on this walk), passing some houses to reach a lane on the left.

You then follow rural lanes, crossing the second high point to reach the edge of Milnrow. There next follows a short section along suburban roads through 'hills' and along 'rivers'. There is a very short stretch through a golf course - watch out for balls - before a section through woodland. The final stretch is along a few suburban roads and under the motorway to reach a small park. You follow a woodland path through the park and then take a short climb to pass a church and drop down to the start.

The route follows a short section of the Pennine Bridleway. Some of the paths in the park are not shown on the map but are visible on the ground.
