Newlands Corner - Netley Heath - Shere - St Martha's Hill - Newlands Corner

A walk of distinctly two halves, the first of which follows the North Downs Way for 3.25 miles through woodland; the second half crosses open grasslands before making the final ascent back to the car park. It should take no more than 3.5 hours at a steady pace, but you may like to leave a good hour or more to explore the delights of Shere, where you can refresh yourselves in one of the many inns, visit the local museum or just share your sandwiches with the ducks on the River Tillingbourne that runs through the village. A fairly undemanding walk which should appeal to families who don't mind stretching their legs that little bit further at the weekend - especially if there's the promise of an ice cream (or burger and chips!) from the shop in the popular car park.

Walked 07/11/2020. This is a simply stunning walk in a very lovely part of Surrey. I agree with Andy though, it should be regraded moderate as the walk is quite long and there are quite a few ups and downs. Aside from some stiles now being kissing gates (updates and new pics sent to WW) the directions are spot on and easy to follow. Great conditions underfoot and wide paths through most of the walk made this a real pleasure. There is great variety in the terrain, views are stunning and the woodland is mixed and interesting; it's a great walk!. 10/10.

Big thanks to David and Liz for putting this excellent walk together. This really is a superb all round which offers something for everyone, although with the amount of uphill walking throughout and particularly on the final stage up to the car park, I would rate this as being moderate as it is a good eight miles plus. There is much to enjoy including town, country, woodland, stunning down land views and some very picturesque riverside sections. You can pop into the White Horse at Shere for a refreshing drink but the food isn't up to much. The fantastic views of the surrounding countryside really are quite something and it was dry and firm underfoot throughout in mid April 2014. A Walkingworld favourite.

We completed this walk today, and after all the rain we have had over the last few months, good sturdy boots are a must, as it was very muddy. Having said that, it was a wonderful walk with some outstanding views, especially on the way back up the steep path to the car park. A wonderful day and a great start to the year

01/03/08 - Deb Barker: Lovely walk and lots of variety. But Step 7 where you turn off the N Downs Way definitely needs a photo someone, and accurate description. All 8 of us missed it. (its where you come to a clearing with paths coming in from the left, and one going off to the right; and a large concrete water storage unit on your left).

Our first walk from the site, we (including the dog) loved it. Very beautiful and a lovely lunch in Shere. Tip for section 7; the missing bench. Look out for lots of crossroads and a circular water storage, that's when you turn off.

Had a problem at section 7, not one of the 6 people in our group noticed a bench or sign "Gravelgate Hill" so we ended up going too far along North Downs Way. Still, we ended up in Gomshall and walked back to Shere to join route again. Other than that was a great walk. Rosie McMillan
