The walk starts in the heart of Newton St Cyres and picks its way through the old-style thatched cottages with a mix of new builds. It is not long however, before you climb the hill into the countryside, with great views out over the woods. Once out in the open fields, take time to look behind to see spectacular views right across the countryside of the Raddon Valley.
Unfortunately, I had to make the walk shorter than originally planned due to a large amount of tree-felling in the Northridge Copse and Whiptail Woods. Both I and the dogs found it very heavy going and a problem to make safe headway, so I decided to shorten the route and extend it at a later date when the way is much clearer.
The new walk is very good, not going through the large woods but the views across the woods are great. Check out wildlife in the fields or on the edge of the woods. There are deer running through the smaller woods, trying to avoid the mud. There are lots of rabbits hopping in and out of hedges, also pheasants and squirrels collecting food for winter. Look overhead and watch the buzzards soaring high in the sky. The views up and across the valleys are fantastic and you can look down over the Coombland Woods with spectacular arrays of fir-trees.
On the return into Newton St Cyres and just across the road from the car park is the church of St Cyr and St Julitta. The church has an old custom: for a token amount, people who want to celebrate a birthday or anniversary can have the church tower lit.
