A surprisingly invigorating short walk from Newtondale Holt (on the North York Moors Railway) up to Killing Nab Scar. The walk begins with a very Trainspotting feeling, as you watch the steam train pull away from the halt leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere! There are trains every hour in each direction, but I would allow a two-hour slot to enjoy the views from Killing Nab Scar. The walk begins easily by following a good Forestry Commission track along the lower slopes of the scar, with views to the south of the Hole of Horcum (as legend goes this was formed when two giants were fighting, as Horcum scooped up the earth to throw at the other). There is then a steep climb (which does have steps at the beginning) to reach Needle Point. The views in all directions as you walk along the top are spectacular. After a steep descent you rejoin the good track at the foot of the hill, to return to the station. Don't be surprised by how long the walk takes you - but do be surprised by the magnificent views. This is a wonderfully wild walk for Forestry Commission land.
