Due to various access problems on the coastal route and with Dounreay being in the middle, it is advisable to pound the road to the end. However, there are points of interest along the way, like a woodcarving centre near Forss Hotel entrance, also the SSPCA Animal Welfare Centre which you can ask to look around at all the animals (but no taking one home just yet!) Dounreay Nuclear Plant (golf ball) does have a visitor centre but requires plenty of forward notice.
