North Middleton - Broadstruther - Carey Burn - Happy Valley - North Middleton
The route follows a well-trodden track for most of the way up and over moorland and offers excellent views. In places one can observe part of the return route. The walk descends to the Coldgate Burn, then after crossing the metalled road, climbs up overlooking the Carey Burn to the isolated and ruined farmstead of Broadstruther. Once down off the hillside, the walk continues up over the next hill and returns via the Carey Burn and Happy Valley. The walk becomes more of a stroll through Happy Valley, though there might be some muddy ground to negotiate for about 100 metres. There's a chance to clean dirty boots in the ford just as the road is gained. From there it's a quick walk back to the car.
Note for dog owners: parts of the walk may not be on public footpaths, so please check restrictions before going in this area - go to www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk. Select National Parks then Northumberland to see the restricted areas. It is possible that dogs may not be allowed on parts of this walk.
