This is a very easy circular walk, interesting as much for the good meal at the old and delightful Bowling Green pub as for the river scenery and the exercise. This walk is along riverbank footpaths in Northwich which are in excellent condition and frequently used. For most of the route they are hard surfaced, but in places compacted turf and there are no stiles. After very wet weather there may be surface mud on the path is a few places. The outward route is the most interesting as you will pass an old lock on the river and may see a boat navigating through it. Also, there are wooded areas such as the Marshall's Arm Nature Reserve and from it see the boats moored at the end of Jalsee boatyard (see photo on the right). You then walk through Greenbank Wood to the long bankside turf path. On the return route you can also pause to explore the public Cheshire Wildlife Trust's Poors Wood which you will pass close by. There are full details in Additional info below. In some places the footpath route is different from that shown on the map. This walk includes instructions for walkers from moored river boats.
This walk is suitable for children, teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs, and suitable for wheelchairs and buggies; although they will need assistance in places and may possibly need to fold the chair in a couple of tight spots. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best in winter, and although you may have close encounters with nettles in places, there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. There are picnic tables and bench seats scattered along the riverbank on the outwards route, and refreshments and toilets at the pub at the start and finish of the walk. If you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with your drink; an excellent finish to a good walk.
