There is a wonderful mix of terrain to suit a variety of tastes on this very interesting circular walk tucked away in the furthermost north-east corner of County Durham. The route includes a coastal path, beach, wooded denes, lanes, fields and a railway path.
Nose's Point from where the walk starts has a very interesting history. The area was the location of the very productive Dawdon Pit until the late 20th Century and prior to that was the site of a blast furnace. From here a very pleasant coastal path takes you south to descend onto the beach at Hive Point, where the Hawthorn Burn emerges from Hawthorn Dene to spill into the North Sea. The route then heads inland through an elegant railway viaduct to explore the dene before arriving at the charming associated village of Hawthorn. The walk then heads north through a series of fields and lanes to intersect and follow a railway path. For the final section the route passes through a delightful deep wooded dene on the outskirts of Seaham to emerge at the coast for a short coastal walk back to the car park at Nose's Point.
There are three variations to the route included in this walk:
Variation 1 offers you the chance closely to follow the cliff edge on the way to Hawthorn Hive Beach. This option increases the length of the walk by 0.25 miles.
Variation 2 misses out Hawthorn Hive Beach and the mouth of Hawthorn Dene. This option reduces the walk length by 0.35 miles.
Variation 3 is the option not to visit Hawthorn Dene. This option reduces the length of the walk by 0.4 miles.
