Ojacastro – Tondeluna – Arviza Circular

From the northern outskirts of the old riverside town of Ojacastro we make our way north-west, soon reaching the Hermitage de Angel. A short diversion of a few metres behind the hermitage brings us to the remains of an ice-making pit. The notice-board nearby gives an indication of how ice was made and transported. From there we begin to climb out of a valley to reach a long fire-break, which we follow along a ridge with some spectacular views.
Next we descend into dense beech-forest and visit a locally famous old tree - 'Haya de Burraldia'. Emerging from the forest we soon descend to the tiny hamlet of Tondeluna, where one can apparently buy goats' cheese (we were unable to find anyone around to ask!) Leaving the hamlet, the old spring is signed and is worth diverting to see. Now we follow a wide and easy lane south-eastwards and downwards, soon reaching the little farming community at Arviza. Carrying on with our descent we reach a tarmac lane which takes us, parallel with the Rio Oja, back to Ojacastro.
