On the Slopes of Cùl Beag, Assynt-Coigach

Stac Pollaidh, Suilven, Ben More Coigach or Quinag may grab more of your attention as you drive by them, but the pair of Cùl Mor and Cùl Beag deserve investigating. Cùl Beag can be reached from various starting points; this route is a quick dash to the top from near the Drumrunie junction on the A835. Except that the gloomy weather drove me off the tops, so this is actually a meander on its southern slopes with great views over to Ben More Coigach. 'Summit-baggers', beware: no tops are reached. But that shouldn't stop you; add your own.

Cùl Beag is one of the distinctive elements of the unique Coigach skyline - it just has to be visited and could be linked on a big day out with its twin Cùl Mor to the NNE, with Stac Pollaidh to the NW, or be the middle ascent of all three.
Start just off the A835 a mile or so from Drumrunie, which itself is about three miles along the road from Knockan Crag. This is one of the historic discovery sites for early geologists which gave them evidence of rock layers moving over one another (the Moine Thrust) and pointed to the immense age of the Earth and the forces acting in it.
