We begin in the lower part of the ancient pueblo of Ortigosa, climbing past old farmhouses to join a GR route that will lead us westward through timeless farming land. Next we climb through oak, beech and pine forest before eventually reaching open alpine meadows at around 1400m. From here the hike becomes much easier with a longish stretch of forest rambling before a steep forest footpath descent. At the bottom there is the opportunity to shorten the walk by about 3 kilometres by retracing our outward footsteps. This hike however continues for another 3.5 kilometres plus to reach the charming Pueblo of El Rasillo where there are a couple of hospitable bars. The final stage follows the easy GR route back to Ortigosa along what is probably the most attractive part of this delightful hike. At the end we cross the suspension bridge over the canyon by the town's famous caves and walk down through the town to return to the start.

Delighted to have had the chance to re-walk this one in October 2023. There have been no navigational changes but some descriptions and pictures have been upgraded and and the latest IGN map provided. It remains a super hike and is highly recommended.
