Over Peover - Great Wood - Spinney Wood - Peover Hall - Over Peover

This walk is in a figure-of-eight, starting at one of the entrance drives to the Peover Hall Estate. The hall itself dates from 1585 and is still occupied as a residence. To the west is the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope, which is open to visitors all year, at a price. The river, known as the Peover Eye, gives its name to the village. Peover is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'bright water'.

Parts of the Church of St Lawrence featured in the walk are 550 years old, but most was rebuilt about 200 years ago.

Lovely late afternoon walk. Varied with a pleasant riverside stretch which was a little overgrown but a clear path. Its now well signposted with proper way markers and straight forward to follow. There is a long roadside stretch at the end which is not as interesting so we would do the walk in reverse next time. Also the pub Whipping Stocks Inn at point 23 is unfortunately now closed.

Did this walk 14/01/2018. Very pleasant Cheshire countryside. But, guidance is out of date. Corrections below: Ref 10. Path is marked by Orange spots on trees, not white. Ref 11. There is no White gate. It should read'The path will lead you to a flight of steep wooden steps taking you up to face the greenhouses. At the top of the steps turn right to walk alongside the greenhouses.' Ref 18. Should now read ' Go along the main path to a Kissing Gate, go through the adjacent Kissing Gate turning right here.' Ref 19. Should read ' Go straight ahead through the meadow through two Kissing Gates.' ref 20. Should read ' Follow the path through a field to another Kissing Gate.' Ref 21. should read ' Go through the Kissing Gate turning left along the drive, not so obvious at first, but when you cross a cattle grid at the Peover Park pumping station overflow bridge it becomes more distinct.' Hope this helps. NB; The woodland walk Ref 8 to 10 was very muddy in mid winter. John Murray

I would agree with the comments from 2014. Directions for WM13 to WM18 need reviewing. WM18. Turn right after going through kissing gate. WM19 to WM20 also need reviewing.

This is a lovely walk having lots of variety but could do with updating as paths and stiles have moved. Thank you
