This easy, level circular walk starts in the delightful seaside resort and fishing village of Alvor, which lies on the banks of the Alvor Estuary.

Leaving the main car park, join elevated boardwalks to cross the extensive dune system situated between the marshlands of the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve and the ocean.

This is another great trail for those walkers who enjoy a spot of birdwatching. In spring and autumn, the mud flats and dunes become a haven for migrating birds; however, whatever time of year you walk this route you will be rewarded with sweeping views over the estuary and the Serra de Monchique beyond.

Eventually, you leave the boardwalks and join a track to reach Praia do Alvor, a beautiful long sandy beach with dunes running behind it.

If you're feeling energetic, there is an optional walk to the end of the breakwater; however, be certain to keep your eyes peeled to the ground to avert any mishaps – there are some sizeable gaps between those boulders.

Leave the beach and return to Alvor along the boardwalks.
