This walk starts along the Cotswold Way, crosses a golf course and then climbs up through the ramparts to reach the top of Painswick Beacon, an iron-age fort with stunning views over the Severn Vale, Gloucester, the Malverns and the Welsh hills. The descent is through the ramparts of the fort which are full of wildflowers and butterflies in summer, to reach a long, mostly level path along the edge of woodland to Kites Hill nature reserve.
The route continues downhill through fields to reach Prinknash Park, a large area of parkland surrounding Prinknash Abbey. A long, gradual ascent on a good track takes us to the walled garden of the Abbey and the cafe, both of which are open to the public and are lovely places for rest and refreshment. From there, the route follows the entrance road gently uphill to reach a permissive path with wonderful views, contouring high up along the hill, passing through fields and along an avenue of ancient trees. The final short section of the walk is through woodland, following the Cotswold Way.
