The route is on good public rights of way and quiet lanes, leaving Penistone Railway Station through a quiet housing estate and moving quickly into open country. There is a steady climb to Hoylandswaine, but a stop at the trig point on the way up to take in the view back to Penistone makes it worth the effort. There are excellent views all the way. This is Pennine country, so expect a cool breeze, even in summer. Pass through the quiet village of Hoylandswaine along lanes and through woodland to Silkstone Common.
