This walk starts from the base of Penshaw Hill and climbs up to the monument, before going down the field to skirt Penshaw Wood and Dawson's Plantation, then down the road to the golf course and descending to reach the River Wear. The route now travels upriver to just beyond Cox Green and then climbs steadily back up to Penshaw Monument. This was built in 1844 and is in memory of John Gorge Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham; it is based on the Temple of Theseus in Athens.
